Biography

Contralto, Zohaniris Torres, is known for her dark jewel-like timbre and dramatic operatic sound. Her opera roles include the Zia Principessa in Suor Angelica, Zita in Gianni Schicchi and Arnalta in L’incoronazione di Poppea. She has performed numerous recitals in Central Florida; in Ithaca, New York; Europe and South America. In the past year, she was a semifinalist in the 21st International Lyric Singing Contest in Trujillo, Peru.

Her most recent performances took place in Berlin where she debuted in the role of Arnalta Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea. On April, she performed the contralto solos in the Mozart Requiem with the Central Florida Orchestra under the direction of Pasquale Valerio. She was featured in concert at the Palacio del Gobierno in Sonora,Mexico. She was also the contralto soloist at the 45th and 44th Annual Performances of Handel’s Messiah with the Messiah Choral Society at Bob Carr Performing Arts Center, under the direction of Dr. John Sinclair.

Zohaniris obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from Rollins College in 2010, and her Master of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Ithaca College in 2013. Zohaniris spend part of her summer between Reno, Nevada where she worked closely with world-renowned mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick for two weeks and Berlin where she was also part of Berlin Opern Fest and Berlin Opera Academy.

 

She presently resides in Central Florida, and works as a professor of voice at Bethune-Cookman University and also has a private studio practice. Upcoming engagements will include singing competitions around the country and recitals.
